The Corner Stool Competition Index Update: July 2024 Quarterly Update
The boxing season reaches the halfway point with some moves at the top
The first half of 2024 built slowly before an outbreak of just the kind of violence that keeps fans coming back.
Tyson Fury is the heavyweight champion no more. Devin Haney was undefeated no more…until he was again. Naoya Inoue and Bam Rodriguez both came off the floor to win by knockout…and Tank Davis just kept scoring the knockout when it was his turn.
The year is halfway done and there are still some big names that need to get back to scratch. For now, there was more than enough action to shake things up since the April index.
Here’s a few notes on the update:
With several wins aging out of consideration, three fighters tied for the most unique rated wins in their last five starts or three years: Inoue, Junto Nakatani, and Saul Alvarez. An additional ten fighters have four unique rated wins, a sign of several upper echelon fighters putting in excellent work.
Despite vacating his junior welterweight belt, Haney remained in consideration for the index. He is joined by Leigh Wood, David Benavidez, and Tyson Fury among active former titlists whose standing merited remaining for now.
Five of the top ten had fights in quarter two while only one, Terence Crawford, is scheduled currently for quarter three.
A total pool of 56 fighters were considered for this update.
What thrills will the second half of the year provide? If it’s anything like the best of what we saw in the last three months, fans will be in for a treat.
Until then, this update opens with a familiar name returning to the top spot:
