He might not be the biggest star among his countrymen, but Japan’s Kenshiro doesn’t have to be. Over the last decade, “The Amazing Boy” has written a ledger that could very well add his name to the walls in Canastota.
He ended one of the great junior flyweight runs of all time with a move to flyweight last year, adding a title in his second weight class. Now, he will attempt to partially unify in his second weight class as well.
He’ll be confronted by a fellow titlist on a hot streak on Thursday (ESPN+, 5 AM EST).
Seigo Akui has come a long way since being stopped twice in three fights between 2017 and 18. Akui has won nine in a row, including his title win last year over long reigning Artem Dalakian.
For fans of the lower weight classes, this unification clash at 112 pounds will cap a championship tripleheader live from the land of the rising sun (fittingly airing while the sun is coming up in the States).
Let’s get into it.
